The majority of burns result from excessive heat or exposure to:

Burns of the First Degree The following procedures can assist in promoting healing and relieving pain in burns of the first degree:

Reduce the heat: To assist in reducing pain and inflammation, run cool water over the affected area for ten to fifteen minutes. Additionally, you can submerge the affected area in cool water or apply a cold compress.

Apply an anesthetic: Aloe vera or petroleum jelly can be used as an over-the-counter burn ointment to aid in healing and prevent infection.

Protect the burn by: Cover the burn with sterile gauze or a non-stick bandage to keep it from getting any worse.

Burns of the Second Degree In order to avoid complications, it is critical to seek medical attention for burns of the Second Degree. Your healthcare provider may recommend the following in addition to the steps above:


Lift the area in question: Reduce swelling by elevating the burned area above the heart if it is on a limb.

Take painkillers: Acetaminophen and ibuprofen, two common over-the-counter painkillers, can help reduce discomfort.

Apply an antibiotic cream: An ointment may be prescribed by your physician to aid in wound healing and prevent infection.

Change the clothes: On a daily basis or as directed by your healthcare provider, change the burn's dressing.

Third-Degree Burns: Third-degree burns can cause serious complications like infection, scarring, and tissue damage, so they need to be treated right away. Treatment options include:


Management of pain: The severe pain that comes with third-degree burns may be alleviated with the help of pain medication.

Grafting skin: For damaged skin to be replaced and wounds to heal, skin grafting may be necessary.
